Office Hours for Good
How I’m Using My Privilege to Help Others
As a straight, cis-gendered white guy (with a beard and glasses) who works in the creative industry, I can’t help but admit privilege has played a huge part in my life (and the lives of others who identify similarly, whether or not they have glasses and a beard…but let’s be honest — they probably do).
After college, this privilege allowed me take a much less traditional path:
I decided to freelance full-time.
Over the past decade, I’ve made a living illustrating posters and prints, building brands, laying out websites, designing apps, writing articles, facilitating workshops, throwing summer camps, starting companies, and pretty much everything else in-between. I’ve even been paid to make weird sounds with my mouth while five other guys sing.
True story.
It wasn’t until two years ago I joined my first (and only) 9-to-5 job where I still work today.
Why am I telling you all of this?
Mainly because this path fundamentally shaped who I am today and what I care about.
Since I’ve had the opportunity to (productively) fumble through my own creative career, I want the same thing for others, especially for those who didn’t start out several steps ahead.
In fact, my goal is to help create a world where work is whatever you want it to be, no matter who you are.
(I know, I know. This sounds like a cheesy corporate vision statement I tested with focus groups, but it’s 100% true and I 100% did not).
This might sound great, but what exactly am I doing to help create this world?
I’d like to introduce “Office Hours for Good.”
(#ohfg for short)
What is Office Hours for Good?
It’s my way of using my privilege to help two groups — individuals looking for help piecing together their own creative careers and organizations who are already doing good.
How does it work?
It’s simple. Anyone can book a one-hour call to chat through a range of topics. After, you’ll receive an email with resources and next steps. You can pay however much you want based on how helpful I was and each month, I’ll donate 100% of the proceeds to a good cause.
What can people ask about during #OHFG?
Over the years, I’ve learned a little about a lot and a lot about a little.
However, I’m going to stick to the following topics:
- Consulting
- Corporate America
- Design
- Entrepreneurship
- Freelancing
- Networking
- Social Media
- Startups
- Writing
