Quick note: I wrote this exactly three months ago, so in this case, “today” is actually Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

There’s nothing special about today.

Today isn’t an anniversary or my birthday or some other major milestone like “International Talk Like a Pirate Day” or #throwbackthursday.

In fact, it’s a Tuesday and a pretty ordinary Tuesday at that.

If there’s nothing special about today, you might be wondering why I decided to even bother writing about it in the first place.

Well, there’s nothing special about today which is exactly why today is also the perfect day to stop drinking.

Like many millennial Americans, alcohol has been omnipresent in all parts of my life. As a fifteen-year-old sipping wine for the first time around my parents’ dinner table. As a college freshman chugging beer during a heated game of beer pong. As a twentysomething taking birthday shots at a bar with friends. As a thirtysomething nervously drinking a few too many cocktails while networking at a happy hour.

Hell, thanks to a COVID-induced quarantine, it even crept its way into my home life in the shape of a few glasses of wine each night.

Without realizing it, I became dependent, which bothers me because I don’t like being dependent on anything or anyone.

That’s right — I’m independent, stubborn, curious, and impatient but if there’s one thing I am above all else, I’m ambitious.

I want to do big things.

I want to open a coffeeshop. I want to write (many) books. I want to travel the world and make friends from different countries. I want to start a podcast. I want to build businesses. I want to help others. I want to create the largest positive impact possible.

I want to do big things but, much to my frustration, I also tend to lack internal motivation. As much as I would like to say I’m the type of person who springs out of bed in the morning thanks to a sense of purpose and excitement, I’m not — I’m a messy, imperfect human being who constantly needs to remind myself to complete…
